TRAINING ON THE INDICATORS OF RESILIENCE IN SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL PRODUCTION LANDSCAPES AND SEASCAPES (SEPLS)

The training was held on September 5, 2016 at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Hawaii, USA.

 

Objectives:

The training aimed to build capacity of the participants and facilitate learning on how to use the “Indicators of Resilience in Socio-ecological Production Landscapes and Seascapes (SEPLS);” to enable them to conduct assessments on social, economic and environmental resilience; and to facilitate the development of resilience strengthening strategies. The interactive session included examples from actual field cases to enrich the learning experience and hands-on exercises to apply the indicators to the land/seascape of the participants’ own interests.

Report

A total of 31 persons participated from 30 different countries. The event was graced by the presence of Ms. Yoko Watanabe, Senior Biodiversity Specialist, Global Environment Facility who gave the opening remarks. Dr. Ikuko Matsumoto of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Dr. Yoji Natori of Conservation International Japan and Mr. William Dunbar of the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) conducted the training, whose contents are listed below. Prof. Kuang-Chung Lee of National Dong-Hwa University added value to the training with a report of his work in Taiwan.

The training provided the participants with explanations on each of the 20 Indicators of Resilience in SEPLS and on how to use the information gathered through the use of the Indicators to develop strategies for improving resilience of land/seascapes and communities. The discussion during the training also included suggestions for improving the Indicators themselves for future consideration.
